Muhammad (), Ahmad (), and Hassan bin Musa () were all born in Baghdad at the start of the ninth century.  Their father was Musa Ibn Shakir, an engineer, astronomer, and a scholar.

He died when they were young, leaving them to the care of Caliph al-Ma'mun, who placed them at the House of Wisdom. This is where they grew up, receiving an elite education and learning about mathematics and astrology.  Throughout the years, they studied and worked together so closely that today their work is almost indistinguishable, but in general Muhammad excelled in geometry and astronomy, Ahmad in mechanics, and Hassan in geometry as well.
